Referring to the findings of the Veterans Scoping Exercise in Wales and the Strategy for our Veterans, where the consultation identified a range of relevant issues relating to Employment, Education and Skills.

One of the key issues identified was for Veterans to enter appropriate employment and to continue to enhance their careers throughout their working lives. 64.80% of Veterans stated this area requires improvement.

• Civilian employers to better recognise the skill set of Armed Forces Community.

• Work with Service leavers to identify skills gaps locally and tailor training to these.

• Translating qualifications gained in service into the civilian workplace is needed.

Armed Forces personnel are highly skilled/trained, and unfortunately, a high number of leavers find themselves in employment where they are underutilising their skills.

There is already a lot of focus on helping Veterans to find employment. However, we intend to focus on Entrepreneurship and Self Employment. These individuals have skills that are easily transferrable into viable businesses.

Starting a business can be rewarding and invigorating, but it can also be risky and challenging. The survival rate for start-ups is low - it is estimated that up to one-third of new business fail in their first year. However, the good news is that many new starts do survive and those that seek support have an even better chance of success..
