Challenge

Barrie-John recovered from open brain surgery having been knocked down by a drunk driver aged 23 in 1998. Barrie-John used outdoor fitness training to drive his recovery and achieve his RAF dream. Barrie-John gave 20 years of service. He was commissioned as an officer in 2016 and was still in service when he was tragically killed by a dangerous driver on 07 January 2019.

Barrie-John’s favourite outdoor activity was mountain biking. He did however recognise the benefits of all types of outdoor fitness training and used this to continuously improve his mountain biking performance

Barrie-John’s favourite training location was around RAF Kinloss in Scotland. He built countless mountain biking trails for young people to get involved and loved the NO FUSS Event 10 under the Ben.

Barrie-John’s intense outdoor fitness training regime led to an invite to the gruelling 24-hour World Mountain Biking Championships in 2018. He used a number of extreme outdoor fitness training techniques to be competition ready. He represented the RAF and rode for 24 hours up and down the mountain without a break! He was a real inspiration!

Barrie-John used outdoor fitness events to support a number of charities throughout his life. Riding from Scotland to London, running marathons and climbing Ben Nevis.

Barrie-John’ moto was train hard and train outdoors! He lived by this and was a true advocate.

Barrie-John was tragically killed by a dangerous driver on 07 January 2019. He was riding his beloved mountain bike on his way home from work at RAF Cranwell. There are no words to describe the devastation to his family, friends, fellow military professionals and charities.

Barrie-John’s devotion to outdoor fitness was a lifelong commitment.
